What are stem cells?

Stem cells were first talked about back in 1969. Initially they were used to fight blood cancer. Over time, the scope of cell therapy has expanded. Orthopedics became one of the first medical fields, which confirmed the effectiveness of this innovative method.

Stem cells are immature cells that form all tissues of the human body. They are a kind of "building material" that clones itself and creates the structures the body needs. Such cells accelerate tissue repair and reduce inflammatory response.

Stem cells are processed in the laboratory and injected directly into the lesion or intravenously. The procedure can take from 30 minutes to one hour. It is repeated if necessary.

The number of cell therapy sessions varies for each individual case. The more severe the pathology, the longer the therapy. As a rule, 1-3 injections are enough to achieve maximum results. After injections, patients have a slight swelling in the joint area. Within 2-3 days, it goes away. At this time, physical activity is limited. When the swelling disappears, you can return to your normal lifestyle.

Stem cells for knee and hip joints?

Knee and hip arthritis are the most common pathologies in orthopedics. They cause pain, stiffness, and limitation of joint function. It is a pathology that becomes the leading cause of disability in adults. Medication treatment of arthritis has only a temporary analgesic effect. As a result, patients have to undergo endoprosthesis of the knee or hip joint.

Stem cells have shown a positive effect in the fight against degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the joints. Studies conducted by foreign medical centers have shown good results in the fight against osteoarthritis of large joints of the 2nd-4th degree. Of the 503 patients who were indicated for endoprosthetics, only 4 had to resort to this intervention after cell therapy.

Do stem cells for knees work?

According to studies conducted in the Czech Republic, Korea and the United States (Institute of Cell Therapy and Immunotherapy, Pavlov Clinic, Phoenix Stem Cell Center, Seoul National University), intra-articular injections of stem cells taken from adipose tissue have proven the ability to regenerate articular cartilage. They improved function and reduced pain in the joint without causing side effects.

Approximately 2,000 patients between the ages of 18 and 94 participated in the studies. In this study, higher concentrations of stem cells had a better effect. Young people and patients with stage 2 arthritis gave the best response to treatment.

After cell therapy, 67% of patients showed complete filling of the cartilage defect in the joint. Within 3 months, 81-53% of patients showed 50-75% improvement in degenerative joint lesions. After six months, these indicators increased by 10-13%. This was confirmed by MRI, arthroscopy, and histology results.

Stem cells are actively used in sports medicine. They allow many times faster recovery from sprains, fractures, sprains, tears and bruises. Injections of cellular material into the injured areas accelerate the process of tissue regeneration by 3-4 times.

Bone healing occurs in one of two ways: the stem cells are regenerated into bone-forming cells when the fracture is small, and into cartilage cells when the fracture is larger. Later, this cartilage is replaced by bone.

Stem cells reduce the inflammatory process and provide a lasting effect of the therapy. They help to fully heal the damaged areas and prevent complications.

Side effects of Stem cell therapy for knee osteoarthritis

Stem cell treatment of knee joints is non-invasive and studies show that side effects are minimal. Some people may experience temporary increased pain and swelling after the procedure. However, the vast majority of people who receive stem cell injections have no side effects.  However, there are different ways of harvesting and processing stem cells, which probably affect the different success rates of published studies. Before treatment, it is best to:

  • Learn as much as possible about the procedure and how it works
  • Consult your doctor

Treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee by the classical method

At present, it is not possible to completely cure arthritis of the knee joint. However, by starting treatment in the early stages of the disease, it is possible to stop the progression of the destruction of cartilage in the joint for a long time.

  • The use of knee braces to relieve the medial parts of the joint;
  • Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which allow you to stop the inflammation in the joint and reduce pain;
  • Reduction of increased body weight - reliably leads to a slowing of the progression of arthrosis;
  • Therapeutic exercise, which excludes axial loads on the joint, allows you to restore muscle tone, prevent hypotrophy and restore the amount of movement in the joint;
  • Taking small doses of muscle relaxants leads to a decrease in spasm of the periarticular muscles, which also significantly reduces the pain syndrome;
  • Physiotherapy courses;
  • Injection of hyaluronic acid, which is a prosthesis of synovial fluid, into the joint;
  • Taking medications from the group of chondroprotectors;
  • Taking drugs that improve blood rheology and blood supply to the bones;
  • In some cases, arthroscopy of the knee joint;
  • Knee joint replacement - endoprosthesis of the knee joint if conservative treatment is ineffective.

Where do we get stem cells to treat joints?

Mesenchymal stem cells are a population of multipotent cells capable of differentiating into connective tissue derivatives, which are heart, vessels, connective tissue skeleton of lungs, bones, vessels, cartilage, smooth muscles, etc. These cells can be obtained, in particular, from umbilical cord blood, umbilical cord and placenta.

Mesenchymal stem cells are a powerful immunomodulator, they secrete many anti-inflammatory bioactive substances (cytokines), reducing the inflammatory process in the lungs. Also, mesenchymal stem cells secrete numerous growth factors, which help to restore not only the affected lung tissue, but also other organs. Sars-CoV-2 is known to affect cells that contain the ACE-2 receptor, which are lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, and blood vessels.

The Experience of the Institute of Cell Therapy

The Institute of Cell Therapy has extensive experience working with mesenchymal stem cells of perinatal tissues (placenta, umbilical cord, umbilical cord blood), which as part of clinical research under the auspices of the Coordinating Center for Transplantation of organs, tissues and cells MOH of Ukraine for 12 years have been successfully used to treat diseases of the cardiovascular system, liver, lesions of the musculoskeletal system and others.

How long does stem cell therapy for knees last?

After the patient arrives at the clinic, you should choose one of two options for your stay. 2-day tour - includes preparation for the injection and follow-up

5-day tour - introduction of cellular material in 2 stages, also before each introduction there will be work to prepare the body for the treatment. Between treatments, city tours and restorative procedures are planned. You can read more at this link.

What happens after knee stem cell injection?

In most cases there are no side effects other than a slight swelling at the puncture point. Your body's condition will not change. You can continue to live as normal as before the procedure. Stem cells start working immediately after being injected into the knee joint. But it should not take about 9 months for the full effect.
