Is honey good for pancreatitis?

You cannot eat sweets with pancreatic inflammation, but in some cases, doctors recommend taking bee nectar during the disease. We will find out whether to eat honey in chronic pancreatitis and in which cases the product can be harmful.

The pancreas produces enzymes that break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates that enter the body. It also produces insulin, which helps the body assimilate the resulting monosaccharides. With pancreatitis, this process is disrupted; the enzymes begin their work before they reach the intestines. From such "self-digestion" gland tissue is damaged, so patients are shown a strict diet to suppress the secretion of enzymes as much as possible. Sugar as the main source of carbohydrates is contraindicated.

However, honey in some cases is possible. How it differs from the usual sweets:

  • consists of monosaccharides - glucose and fructose, so it does not activate the secretion of enzymes, which facilitates the work of the pancreas
  • Phytoncides and organic acids in the product have an anti-inflammatory effect and prevent the degeneration of pancreatic cells
  • Vitamins and amino acids regulate metabolism and normalize the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Has a laxative effect, which is useful for constipation against pancreatitis.
  • Trace elements such as manganese support the pancreas and increase insulin production
  • Iodine and B vitamins improve blood circulation, restore the supply of nutrients to damaged tissues

Such a complex effect alleviates the condition of the patient and prolongs the periods of remission. However, to accurately answer whether it is possible to honey with pancreatitis of the pancreas, it is necessary to take into account the stage of the disease. And also the form of the pathology and possible complications.

Is honey bad for pancreatitis?

The disease can proceed with disruption of the islets of langerhans - formations in the pancreas that produce the hormone insulin, which is necessary for the digestion of glucose. Thus, against the background of inflammation of the gland develops diabetes. In this case, honey can harm the patient.

An interesting fact: before you start eating honey, you should test your blood glucose levels before and after meals to detect a hidden course of diabetes. If you don't have a home tester, be sure to see your doctor.

In acute pancreatitis, swelling of the pancreas develops. In this case, the work of all structures of the organ is disturbed. The gland needs to be unloaded as much as possible, so the bee product as a source of carbohydrates is contraindicated. Honey during an exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis is not allowed for the same reasons.

The maximum benefit of natural sweetness will bring in the period of remission. Provided that the patient does not have diabetes mellitus. Honey in cholecystitis and pancreatitis improves the tone of the ducts, facilitates the excretion of bile and pancreatic enzymes. The active substances in honey help break down fats and remove excess fluid from the body.

How can I use honey for pancreatitis?

You need to remember that in this case, honey is not a cure, because it does not directly affect the pancreas. You can eat it for prevention in small portions.

In stable remission, the daily dose should not exceed 1-2 tablespoons. And a single - 2 teaspoons. Start taking it with ½ teaspoon a day. If the reaction is good, the daily dose is gradually increased. How quickly to increase the rate of consumption depends on the patient's well-being. Do not speed up the process much, it is better to stretch it for at least 2-3 weeks.

The daily rate is divided into 3 to 5 receptions. It is desirable to slowly sip honey or eat it in a snack with herbal tea.

With pancreatitis, honey is eaten on an empty stomach, half an hour before breakfast. After - during the day, 30 minutes before a meal. The product is also not recommended to use at the same time as medications. The tablets are drunk at least half an hour after consuming honey or 2 hours before consuming honey.

The product should be introduced into the menu gradually, waiting for a certain interval from the beginning of remission. For chronic inflammation, honey is started to be consumed 1 month after remission, and after acute pancreatitis - not earlier than after 3 months.

An interesting fact: which variety to choose depends on personal preference. However, the dark varieties (buckwheat, cottonwood, chestnut) contain more trace elements, such as manganese and iron. They are good for blood circulation and nourishment of damaged tissues, as well as metabolism. Lighter varieties (acacia, lime, flower) contain more vitamins, which normalize the immune and endocrine system.

At the first unpleasant symptoms, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea or allergic reactions, the reception should be stopped immediately.
