Aesthetic dentistry does not stand still. We have already talked about veneers, lumineers, whitening and today we will talk about another way to make your smile unique - the decoration with stones.

A few years ago, the American singer Madonna introduced the fashion for these cute and intricate decorations for the teeth, which was immediately picked up by celebrities around the world.

Today, rhinestones on tooth enamel are no longer rare, teenagers and young women are happy to use them, wanting to stand out and draw attention to their smile.

But let's analyze if all that glitters on the teeth are rhinestones.

Any Ukrainian dental clinic will tell you that no, this is not the case. If you want to decorate your teeth with something, you have four options:

• Rhinestones. They are made of transparent or colored glass, have a variety of shapes and are attached to the tooth with a special adhesive. Don't confuse dental rhinestones with the ones you see on your nails and clothes. Conventional rhinestones in a couple of days in the mouth, would lose their shine and come off. Rhinestones for teeth are created specifically for the needs of dentistry and are treated at the factory in a special way, while perfectly polishing.
• Skyce. Most often they are decorations made of precious or semi-precious stones, originally diamonds or Swarovski stones, today other stones are also used.Skyce also lend themselves to dental glue.
• Twinkles. These are different figurines of precious metals inlaid with precious or semi-precious stones. They come in a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes. Installation does not require disturbing the integrity of the tooth enamel.
• Precious stones. The most expensive and harmful to the teeth. Due to the convex and irregular shape of the gemstone, a cavity of up to 0.5 mm is made in the tooth enamel and the gemstone is fixed. It is necessary for the better fixation of the jewel. As you understand, after the stone is removed, the tooth will need to be restored.

How gemstones are set is clear. Now let's understand how everything else is set.

• Cleaning the oral cavity, removing plaque.
• Whitening of tooth enamel (if necessary and desired by the patient).
• The surface of the tooth is slightly polished to remove roughness and dried.
• Dental adhesive and light-reflective compound is applied to the place where the jewelry is attached.
• The composite is applied and the rhinestone is fixed.
• After that, the area with skyce, rhinestone or twinkle is polymerized and the operation is completed.

After the placement, there is a feeling of something foreign in the mouth, but for most of our patients it passes during the day.

The cost of such procedure in Ukraine starts from eight euros.

The whole procedure of dental jewelry placement, without cleaning or bleaching, takes no more than 15 minutes. It is completely safe and painless. And most importantly, you can remove the jewelry without damaging your teeth in just a couple of minutes at the dentist's office.

This kind of jewelry is not just for beauty, besides that, it helps:

• Hide cracks and damage on enamel.
• Disguise stains and minor imperfections of the teeth.

But even such a seemingly innocuous procedure has contraindications:

• Allergy to the components of the decoration.
• Thin or weak enamel.
• Caries or inflammation in the oral cavity, gums.
• Incorrect bite.
• Age of the patient less than 12 years.
• In most cases, such decorations are not applied to crowns, veneers or lumineers.

If the jewelry is installed properly, it may last up to 5 years. But you should also take care of its preservation:

• Watch your oral hygiene.
• Rinse your mouth after each meal.
• Avoid using electric toothbrushes and toothpaste with abrasive ingredients.
• Avoid hard or coarse foods which could damage the jewelry.
• Have your teeth professionally cleaned.
